Sounds like you need to load ANSI.SYS.  If you are using DJGPP, DJGPP 
outputs everything through STDOUT, which is basically the DOS BIOS I 
believe.  If you load your ANSI.SYS driver (or a similar program) you 
shouldn't have any problems.

CONFIG.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS
or
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ANSI.SYS
