DJ wrote here that it should be easy to convert the relevant library
functions.  I would prefer some measurements of speed in both cases,
so we know what we are doing.  But since I don't have time right now
to do this myself, please feel free to submit a patch to library
functions that are affected by these problems.

For what it's worth: my machine has a mundane CL-GD544x SVGA (upgraded
from 5428 a few months ago).
