The most common example is 340x200x256, which was extremly popular before the onset of fast VESA and SVGA video cards. To use Mode-X, you can get either XLib or Allegro 2.2, which are found at ftp://x2ftp.oulu.fi/pub/msdos/programming/djgpp2/ The only down side to Mode-X is that there are many restrictions of what you can do.
