Are you really typing "gcc: prog.c"?  Get rid of that colon if you are. 
Anyway, make sure you are in the same directory as your source code when
you go to compile.  Also if you've used an IDE like Borland to write the
code, make sure that it saved it as a '.c' file rather than '.cpp'.

How about a directory listing of where you keep your source code?
