Does this happen when you run DJGPP programs which come with the 
distribution (e.g. go32-v2)?  What version of 386Max is that?

AFAIK, Charles Sandmann used 386Max (among other DPMI providers) to
test the v2 setup, so it should work.  I also hear that Quake runs
with 386Max.  Charles?
