As a beginner, I would agree with Eli: the main challenge for a new student of C such as myself is learning the language, and I find that using DJGPP and Emacs gives me a 32-bit environment which facilitates this process. One work in progress is more documentation aimed specifically at beginners, although I would emphasize that README.1ST and the FAQ are generally quite readable and often entertaining. An additional point: as the FAQ points out, to use DJGPP is to move into an interesting world somewhere between DOS and UNIX. I must admit that that was a major attraction for me, and it might not be for just any user . In fairness, let me add that since my only experience is with DJGPP, I may not be the best person to compare products . Margo Schulter
