IMHO, people who just begin to learn C might as well begin with DJGPP.  
One of the main reasons for the above-mentioned steep learning curve is 
prior experience with other DOS-based C compilers which do almost 
everything differently.  If no such experience exists, I don't think 
DJGPP is such a problem to begin programming C.
