I experienced this problem once before when attempting to do
some VESA programming. The program I was working on enabled near
pointers (disabled memory protection), and would then go merrily 
about corrupting memory. After running my program make/gcc would 
die with SEG/GP faults. I don't know if this explains your particular
difficulty, though.
