The mail -> news gateway was adding the dot in accordance with the
NNTP spec, but was adding it too often.  I've updated it, and
hopefully it will not do this any more.  Just in case, here's
a dot-started line sent from mail:

And here's a dot on a line by itself (which should be dot-quoted, but
should look OK in news as well):
