Subject: under scores on functions

When I create a library using ar functions within the library
do not start with an underscore. I get undefined functions
when I link to this library.
I use [ ar -rcv files.o libfile.a] to create a library.
a r[ -vt libfile] shows that the functions in libfile do not have
underscores.
When I use a function in the library I get an undefined symbol error.

What am I doing wrong.

I must apologize  in advance. There will be 2 messages following this
that will be sent. I have accidently added them to be sent later.  If anyone
knows how to delete mail tagged to be 'sent later' under aol, E-mail me
before I am forced to send them.
