He has a 486dx2, with a 540MB drive and 8MB of RAM running PCDOS (Ok we're talking low cost here!). There's plenty of space on the drive. I copied the files off oak.oakland.edu using my Sun workstation at work and put the files on floppies using the pcfs ( PC file system ) to mount the floppy as an MSDOS floppy ( it took 25 floppies at 95 to 99% utilization!). At home I unzipped the files to directory \djgpp using the supplied unzip386.exe program supplied with the djgpp files. This all seemed to work great. I followed dj's README.1st instructions and copied the files required, including the maintainance files and then ran the maintaintance .bat files, in order, as instructed ( actually dj's instructions didn't mention that they must be run after they are unzipped but I read it in one of the other README files, maybe there are some other files that must be run after they are unzipped? ). This all worked alright. However, when I go to the \djgpp\samples\hello directory to test the compiler it appears something isn't right! I tried the testit file first and it tells me all the things I haven't loaded on. It didn't tell me anything I thought I needed to run the hello compile. It mentioned Objective-C and Bison but I don't want either one just yet (what's Bison anyhow?). However, it then tries to compile the hello program and either hangs or re-boots the machine! I tried doing the compile using the tryit program and manually typing the commands but I get the same result. I read all the README files I could find and the README.faq file provided with djgpp but this problem isn't mentioned and I got no suggestions. However, I found a couple of places that mention something that makes me wonder if I got all the files I should have. One comment, by dj mentioned that the file gas211bn.zip ( the assembler) file is required; however, I have been unable to find such a file and the testit program doesn't mention it as missing. The other question is about the install.exe program. I got the impression from the README file that this is only used if installing from floppies provided by dj or the FSF. I didn't try running it yet; should I run this program? I'm sure the files are not loaded on my floppies like the ones provided by dj or FSF. I'm pretty new to the DOS world; I have done all my work in UNIX so there may be some very basic problem I'm not aware of at work here. I'd appreciate any suggestions you can make. ******************************************************************* * * * Jack Duke * * (408) 774-8648 * * duke AT cairn DOT Eng DOT Sun DOT Com * * * ******************************************************************* * * * I was gratified to be able to answer promptly, and I did. * * * * I said I didn't know. * * * * --- Mark Twain * *******************************************************************
