I got the problem solved (apparently). I simply put 'DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE 3000' in my config.sys and rebooted and all is well. I don't spend much time in the DOS world so I don't pretend to understand all the different memory managers available, but I do know that I never had to put this line in my config.sys before. (I have been using DJGPP for a couple of years now in various revisions). When did this change? What prompted the change? Where is it documented? (I have looked in all the documents that got extracted to my disk and could not find any mention of this -- or any other related change). Perhaps it is not really important that I understand all the ramifications of this but I would like to have been warned. Oh, well. DJGPP is a great piece of work. By and large I prefer it to my Borland C++ (3.1). I am sure willing to put up with a few wrinkles in making it work. And the tech support is by far more thorough (and faster) than I have ever experienced with Borland (8-^). Thanks again for all the help. Mark elston AT cave DOT arc DOT nasa DOT gov
