Date: Fri, 25 Jun 1993 18:53:32 +1000 From: Cameron Davidson There is a 16-bit version of the stand-alone info reader available for MS_DOS. Get MKINF10.ZIP from simtel-20 or a mirror site. It contains info.exe, the stand-alone reader and makeinfo.exe, to let you create info input files from texinfo source. (However it is only 16-bit, so I have to use the unix system to create any big files and copy them over). If you have not come across the info system before, then, like me, you will probably find that it does not work as distributed. You need a top directory info file, called 'dir'. The best I could do was find one on the unix box and mangle it for my PC... If you have nothing better you could try file below as a template, and edit it as you please. The 'dir' file should be placed in c:\emacs\info, or else somewhere pointed to by env variable INFOPATH. ---- basic dir file starts on following line ----- -*- Text -*- This is the file .../info/dir, which contains the topmost node of the Info hierarchy. The first time you invoke Info you start off looking at that node, which is (dir)Top. File: dir Node: Top This is the top of the INFO tree This (the Directory node) gives a menu of major topics. Typing "d" returns here, "q" exits, "?" lists all INFO commands, "h" gives a primer for first-timers, "mTexinfo" visits Texinfo topic, etc. --- PLEASE ADD DOCUMENTATION TO THIS TREE. (See INFO topic first.) --- * Menu: The list of major topics begins on the next line. * Info: (info). Documentation browsing system. * As: (as). The GNU Assembler * Cpp: (cpp). The GNU C preprocessor * Makeinfo: (makeinfo). generate info files from texinfo source * Termcap: (termcap). The termcap library, which enables application programs to handle all types of character-display terminals. ----- end of dir ----------- Cameron Davidson, CSIRO Division of Manufacturing Technology, Telephone: +61 7 212 4535 Qld Centre for Advanced Technologies, Facsimile: +61 7 212 4681 2643 Moggill Rd, Pinjarra Hills, Qld, 4069.
