The biggest problem that I would have with an archiver that is specific to 
djgpp is simply incompatibility.  I couldn't test it on vax before 
downloading it and once downloading it, I couldn't use my various utilities 
to browse the source files when needed.  I guess it is the old question of 
benefits vs. liabilities.  I would say a tentative yes to using your own 
archiver.
