I've checked in a fix for this and I *think* I've fixed the "check_case"
handling as well.

Corinna, you'll see that I had to do some minor surgery on one of your
routines since the logic in path_conv::check is different.  I hope I got
it right.

I'd still like to have someone pick some holes in my current way of
doing things.  I've still got this feeling that I missed something
important.
