I had this same problem. Its caused (?) by the b19 compiler. You'll need to get Mumit's EGCS version to get around this it. Of course, if you're going to try to build all the source (compiler and friends too), you'll need to download the latest binutils (I believe that 2.9 is the same as the 980303 version Mumit mentions) and the EGCS source as well. I haven't quite taken this step although I find that EGCS builds winsup and newlib OK, without needing to rebuild anything else really. If you have questions about this process, let me know.
