Maybe I spoke too soon, or maybe it's not at all related, but my build
finally failed like this:

The blamed binary is indeed there, and it looks like it's relative
nested location (../../.././winsup/doc/xidepend) has somehow been
miscalculated.

What am I missing / doing wrong here?
