One more possibly relevant piece of information-- inside "ssh localhost", the command "yes" without args is much much harder for me to interrupt than "yes aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" -- about 6 minutes vs. about 12 seconds.
