These are undisputedly very good reasons. In some ways I hate to admit that, but I find I can often avoid to start X11 and the associated memory churn simply because I now have emacs-w32. That would be even better, yes. And perhaps make that a point in the next announcement so hopefully more people are aware of it. It isn't difficult to change the priorities once you know that emacs is in fact using the alternatives system.
