It sure looks like CTRL-C worked > above. Maybe ping got indeed interrupted, but I didn't get the shell prompt back for another two or three minutes. Also, when the shell receives the Ctrl-C (as it would when ping was already gone) it would normally produce another prompt for each Ctrl-C, but this did not happen even though I tried multiple times to interrupt ping. After a while I got a single prompt back.
