Look for the Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) as described at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/294895
removing it helps some computers a lot.

Another program that causes problems on some computers is the MS Office 
2010 Click-to-Run system. It's usually associated with the trial 
version. With this system, software is downloaded and installed 
dynamically as it is used. Hangs and slowdowns when logging off or 
rebooting were noted. Removing this will help. If MSO is needed, the DVD 
version can be installed.

Also removing .NET and re-installing it can help some computers.
