I still couldn't convince 5.1.45 to build, but after some fiddling with libtool incompatibilities I was able to coerce 5.1.39 into compiling. I've been running a native 4.1 server for several years, and I don't see any need to change this. The client library and the command line client were all I was asking for, and I'm all set now.
