I had the same problem, and a fix was already mentioned (though it seemed to me to have drawbacks, also discussed). The fix is to set: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 (or perhaps differently for you, since I see you are from Berlin!) Someone also pointed out that some utilities acted differently between en_US.UTF-8 and en_us.UTF-8 ... If you look over messages from the last couple of days you will see some of this.
