I'm not about to rebuild dozens of X11 programs just to provide such symlinks. :-) When Gentoo underwent the /usr/X11R6 -> /usr transition a few years back, they made the /usr/X11R6/ directory a symlink to /usr. Unfortunately I was unable to do the same because other packages not technically part of X11 were still using the obsolete prefix[1], so it wouldn't necessarily have been empty after the upgrade.
