Another day, another update. The patch was accepted upstream and I also noticed that the build failed *after* generating the main executable. So I was in fact able to check if the patch does anything useful. And it does! :-) With "set terminal ggi" in my ~/.gnuplot file, I'm now able to see gnuplot output w/o an X-server.
