Now, my startx suddenly succeeded twice in a row. I re-ran setup.exe as Administrator, and got the same dialog as twice before already: This program might not have been installed correctly ... offering to 'reinstall using recommended settings'... I could find no mention of this in the FAQ. I have not deactivated the UAC, should I?
