Version 1.16.1-1 remains the previous version. NEWS: ===== This is a new upstream release. NEWS from upstream is attached. This release requires cygwin-1.5.24 or later. See also the upstream documentation in /usr/share/doc/tar-1.19/. DESCRIPTION: ============ GNU Tar is an archiver program. It is used to create and manipulate files that are actually collections of many other files; the program provides users with an organized and systematic method of controlling a large amount of data. Despite its name, that is an acronym of "tape archiver", GNU Tar is able to direct its output to any available devices, files or other programs, it may as well access remote devices or files. The main areas of usage for GNU Tar are: storage, backup and transportation. UPDATE: ======= To update your installation, click on the "Install Cygwin now" link on the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your system. Save it and run setup, answer the questions and pick up 'tar' from the 'Base' category (it should already be selected). DOWNLOAD: ========= Note that downloads from sources.redhat.com (aka cygwin.com) aren't allowed due to bandwidth limitations. This means that you will need to find a mirror which has this update, please choose the one nearest to you: http://cygwin.com/mirrors.html QUESTIONS: ========== If you want to make a point or ask a question the Cygwin mailing list is the appropriate place. - -- Eric Blake volunteer cygwin tar maintainer CYGWIN-ANNOUNCE UNSUBSCRIBE INFO: ================================= To unsubscribe to the cygwin-announce mailing list, look at the "List-Unsubscribe: " tag in the email header of this message. Previous versions always stored absolute file names in rename records, even if -P was not used. This is fixed: rename records contain file names processed in accordance with the command line settings. * Fix --version output. * Recognition of broken archives. When supplied an archive smaller than 512 bytes in reading mode (-x, -t), the previous version of tar silently ignored it, exiting with code 0. It is fixed. Tar now issues the following diagnostic message: 'This does not look like a tar archive', and exits with code 2. * Fix double-dot recognition in archive member names in case of duplicate '/.'. * Fix file padding in case of truncation of the input file to zero size. --------------060704050008020305080509 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/ --------------060704050008020305080509--
