The .Xdefaults solution will affect all instances of rxvt, not just the one spawned by chere. There is a way to distinguish those instances by name, but then you'd still need to at least set the name, which means passing arguments via chere. This is also a reply to Dave (the chere maintainer) regarding why someone would want to pass arguments to rxvt.
