The first ls takes forever, then subsequent ones go immediately. It doesn't matter whether "-l" is passed or just a bare "/bin/ls". It's a similar situation to the OP's problem, it is a directory which contains only a few (~20) subdirectories, but each of those contains 10^3-10^4 files. I don't have any of these known culprits installed, I have as few background processes as possible running.
