So I guess the answer is (cd / && ls -1 usr/bin/* ) >a.txt gunzip -c /etc/setup/*.lst.gz | grep '^usr/bin/.' > b.txt cat a.txt b.txt | sort | uniq -u ... although this will also find anything that was created by a postinstall script as well: shortcuts in particular.
