I found it. I am using cygwin scp in order to interact with Mercury ITG (Kintana). They advised running a modified shell to avoid an error where bash processes remain after exiting. The modification they recommended follows: /bin/bash --login --noediting -i All is OK if I ditch their recommendation and use the normal bash shell. I will go on their forum and warn about this.
