I still haven't determined a cause, but it seems to have gone away for the moment. I should note that a: I was building on an NFS volume, and b: I had running in another window 'while sleep 2; do make install; done' (an equivalent, anyway). After stopping the repeating 'make', I'm not seeing it any more. Maybe this information can help with the 'cron job hangs' problem.
