You really should do a VPATH build as instructed in
<http://cygwin.com/faq/faq.programming.html#faq.programming.building-cygwin>.

The size is due to the debug information.  It does not affect the memory
usage or speed of execution.  To get rid of it, set CFLAGS appropriately
or use strip.
