To think, all this just to try to figure out why rsync is hanging.... So, rather than following the quick 'n dirty suggestion of Igor (Thanks though Igor), I followed the FAQ #15 on installing snapshots with the same problem---cygwin will no longer run with snapshot. Because the error message I get when I try to launch the cygwin shell flashes by too fast to see, I decided to launch a Windows command window and then run bash.exe from there. This is the error I got: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\>cd cygwin C:\cygwin>cd bin C:\cygwin\bin>bash.exe 7 [main] ? (3732) C:\cygwin\bin\bash.exe: *** fatal error - system shared memory version mismatch detected - 0x75BE0084/0x75BE0095. This problem is probably due to using incompatible versions of the cygwin DLL. Search for cygwin1.dll using the Windows Start->Find/Search facility and delete all but the most recent version. The most recent version *should* reside in x:\cygwin\bin, where 'x' is the drive on which you have installed the cygwin distribution. Rebooting is also suggested if you are unable to find another cygwin DLL. C:\cygwin\bin> This was the 1/8 snapshot. Thanks again everyone for helping. At least I'm learning as I peel each new layer from the onion, lol :) -K -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/
