Thank you for the two quick replies.

I had the following line in .bashrc

path="/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/opt/qt/3.3/bin:$PATH"

(note the small letters at the beginning of the statement - CAPITALS
ROSS, CAPITALS!)
