WHY an "xterm setup" if, as I wrote, the problems are present in standard bash shell, i.e. that launched with cygwin.bat. I have reinstalled Cygwin, installing only the BASE category: NO "xterm", NO XORG, NO RXVT. ONLY BASE PACKAGES.
