You still haven't told me what system you are running on (hint: uname -a), whether it is cygwin or something else. But, you are certainly using an outdated version of cp, which would explain your bug. As I pointed out in http://sources.redhat.com/ml/cygwin/2005-02/msg00081.html, coreutils 5.3.0 correctly creates a sparse file with --sparse=always when there are at least 128k of 0s in the source, and preserves the sparse-ness of the source with --sparse=auto. > So far I haven't found the latest coreutils package yet.
