I just spent several hours getting a program to run as a service on Windows XP. I created a user account that only belongs to the "Users" group. I created my service to run in this account. But the service would not start. I found that I had to launch the "group policy editor" gpedit.msc and add the privilege "Log on as a service" to the user account. I suspect that you already know this.
