I highly doubt it. Anyway I think the problem that you describe seems to be the same problem that MC experiences with its subshell. Both rxvt and MC have a subshell, both control it via a pty, both leave stale shells behind... This problem has been on my TODO list for a while but I didn't really have time to investigate properly... till now. I'm doing some enhancements to MC currently and I also plan to look at the problem with the subshell.. maybe tommorow.
