I'll give another example, perhaps the pattern will become clear: Change set stunnel='/cygdrive/c/stunnel/stunnel-3.22 -c -d pop3 -r mail.attbi.com:995&' export stunnel into either alias stunnel='/cygdrive/c/stunnel/stunnel-3.22 -c -d pop3 -r mail.attbi.com:995&' or stunnel () { /cygdrive/c/stunnel/stunnel-3.22 -c -d pop3 -r mail.attbi.com:995 & } export stunnel Does the above make it clearer?
