Hello all,

Note: I'm not trying to start a flame war.
      You might find my request just ridiculous.
      You might have seen it before and laughed about it or even
      didn't take it for serious, but ...

... I really like to see a port of the Samba suite to Microsoft Windows!

Please read on!

This sounds quite absurd, because Samba is a software that tries to
emulate the file serving capabilities of Windows as best as possible
in order to provide an alternative to Windows file servers.

So why should one port it to Windows?! Let me explain:
Samba does not only do a great job in emulating Windows fileserving,
in fact it offers MORE features than Windows. What I need e.g. is
the share-directory redirection and variable substitution features
that you can use in smb.conf to make Samba handle different
client machines and users differently. What I also heavily use is
the preexec- and postexec-scripts on client connects and disconnects.
You've probably seen a share definition like this one before:

   [profiles]
   path=/data/profiles/%m/%U
   root preexec = /data/profiles/.scripts/prepare %m %U

You cannot do this in Windows without Samba... (You might think of
other things that are possible with Samba, but not with Windows. Any ideas?)

So, you might ask me: If you need Samba funcionality why don't you use Linux
or whatever Unix to run Samba on? Well, this is hard to explain...
In fact, I do use Linux right now, but there are certain political reasons
(in the company I work for) that force me to use Windows instead. I won't
go into detail here, and you might have your own thoughts on this, but
this is my situation. I'm sure there are quiet a lot other people who are
in the same situation, so my request is not too absurd anymore, isn't it?

So, my hope is that there are some (or at least one) developer(s) out
there who are interested in such a task. I'm not a developer myself, but if
anyone showed serious interest and activities in developing a Samba port
to Windows I would support him/her/them in any possible way.
