When I change the 'group' field, it has no effect
on the login.

When I corrupt my "S-1-5-21..." field, the behavior
of ssh is similar to what you have described.  I am
prompted for a password, and after a "successful" login,
NT (or 2000) closes the session before a prompt is
displayed ("Connection to <server> closed by remote host").
