In the value of PS1 you'll see "escape sequences" (things starting with \033). The escape sequences that change the colors are of the form '\033[99m', where 99 is the 2-digit color value (same as in dircolors, 'dircolors --print-database' for details). Change the color values to something more pleasing, or remove the escape sequences altogether for the default foreground color.
