Well...

Here is what I do, I set up the following alias in my .bash_profile:

alias ls='ls --color '

It separates things by color.  Depending on your taste, you may like it,
or you may think I am utterly tasteless and withough fashion sense,
which, if you met me, you would know by inespection to be true.
