I am a customer and I use gcc from Cygwin every day on my laptop!  :-)

(Sorry, I couldn't resist, a laptop IS my main machine)

I also use the native version of Perl that Cygwin comes with for quite
a bit of work.  It works for me straight out of the box, no fuss, no
building,
no intelligence required = ideal for country boy physicists  :-)

It even works quite nicely with the Open Perl IDE, which is pretty slick
and also free.
