Thanks to all who replied,

I think that a link to the thread started by:
http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2002-01/msg00353.html

should be a must read for setting up cygwin console. It seems strange to me 
that FAQ doesn't mention rxvt as an alternative to cmd.com/command.com. Such 
a simple hint would save pleeeeeenty of people's time.
