I would like to see some discussion as to what the problem may be and how we can go about fixing it, if possible. It may turn out to not be a problem with Cygwin, but since it directly affects the operation of what I consider one of the more useful tools in Cygwin, I think it is appropriate for this list. That said, on to the problem. The problem exists on a Windows 2000 host which has had SP2 applied. There was one email on the list where someone had applied SP1 and then SP2, I have confirmed that it doesn't seem to matter once SP2 is applied. The symptom is that unless the Server Service is running, cygrunsrv will not start sshd. Note this is not a problem with OpenSSH as it never even gets called by cygrunsrv, and works fine outside of the service tool. Also, unless the Computer Browser Service is running, cygrunsrv will not start cron, same behavior as with sshd. I do not know if other cygrunsrv processes are affected as these are the only two that I have currently enabled on my farm. From what I have been able to determine, the problem seems to be in the interoperation of the cygrunsrv and the Service Manager once SP2 is applied, such that cygrunsrv no longer behaves as expected. Does anyone have any further insight to this? This is an annoyance to me as it breaks my security model, such that I have to have the Server Service running to have SSH, when I have SSH so that I can turn off the Server Service :). I am willing to help with this in any way that I can, but I have no idea where to start looking. Can someone give me a nudge as to where they think the problem may be? Has anyone been able to get SSH to work on a 2k SP2 host, without running the Server Service? -- Prentis Brooks | prentis AT aol DOT net | 703-265-0914 | AIM: PrentisBrooks Senior System Administrator - Web Infrastructure & Security A knight is sworn to valor.
