I seem to recall reading somewhere that this would work around the behavior you describe on Win9x systems. WinNT/2000 of course does not exhibit that problem, at least not on NTFS. I'm not sure about FAT32. Thus for example, when .vimrc is saved, it is saved using the long file name vimrc~1. The consequence is the name of file .vimrc is changed to vimrc~1.
