UWIN's shipped with make 3.76.1 but I've built my own 3.79.1 and both versions suffer from occasional hangs, not crashes, in recursive makes. I saw this problem with csh scripts executed from makefiles and sometimes with sh scripts. Last week I found a seemingly reproducible case for recursive make hangs. I'm going to debug this. If I find out what's going wrong on UWIN I'll let you know, maybe there's a simple solution which works for both systems.
