Some people have cygwin working on XP, 
but it is officially unsupported. Search 
the archives with google 

cygheap site:cygwin.com

to find the lengthy discussion from the 
many many people who have had this error 
on XP.

I have cygrunsrv.exe 0.94, I have followed all of the guidelines listed in 
"SSHD Setup".  It runs fine on some machines but not on Windows XP RC2.

Here is the error message I get when doing "net start sshd" or equivalent

C:\cygwin\usr\sbin\sshd.exe: *** Couldn't reserve space for cygwin's heap 
(0x241
0000) in child, cygheap, Win32 error 487
